Se sabe que Charlie Chaplin, el famoso actor, director, escritor y productor de cine; una vez participó en un concurso de imitadores de Charles Chaplin. Sin embargo, no alcanzó ni las finales, increíblemente el resultado fue desastroso, no pasó de la primera ronda y los jueces le dieron una de las peores calificaciones de su tanda. En una entrevista realizada para el Chicago Herald el 15 de Julio de 1915 Chaplin relata la historia con gran ironía y comentó que fue: “tentando a darles lecciones de la “caminata de Chaplin”, por pena y también deseando ver la cosa hecha correctamente”. No obstante, para el jurado Chaplin no era suficientemente bueno imitando a Chaplin y el premio fue otorgado a un hombre de nombre Milton Berle.
Hay una versión falsa de ésta anécdota que dice que Chaplin se alzó con el tercer puesto. Sin embargo es mentira ya que Chaplin ni siquiera llegó a las finales.
Si bien la anécdota es de no creer, Snopes, el sitio que se dedica investigar leyendas urbanas, descubrió un recorte del Chicago Herald con la entrevista confirmando la veracidad del hecho.
