Siempre ha causado admiración el hecho de saber que las aves logran hacer largos viajes y regresar a casa por el mismo camino. Pero no se pierden y conocen tan bien el camino por que tienen una especie de magnetrómetro natural… De hecho científicos alemanes hicieron este descubrimiento. Resulta que se ha descubierto que en la parte superior de los picos de casi todas las aves, existen centenares de depósitos de hierro en las terminales nerviosas, los que hacen la función de un magnétrometro al alinearse con los polos magnéticos de la Tierra como si de una brújula se tratara.Esto sin duda que arroja luz al tema sobre cómo varias especies de aves se orientan mientras migran de norte a sur (o viceversa), y de como palomas mensajeras conocen su camino de regreso a casa. La explicación ahora es que estas aves van formando un mapa de orientaciones magnéticas, las cuales muy posiblemente memorizan en secuencia y recuerdan en secuencia inversa, de modo que siempre puedan regresar al mismo punto de partida.
